Rally – Join our call to action against police brutality in Greece!
During the pandemic in Greece, the right-wing government of Nea Dimokratia (ND) and PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis, favoured enhancing police funding over strengthening the struggling public health system. Police squads are engaging in predatory behaviour, intimidating local residents with verbal and physical abuse, and transforming neighbourhoods into war-zones. As a consequence many horrifying events have been unfolding in Greece, along with other scandals:
-the criminalisation of protesters, beatings of detainees with bags over their heads and weaponisation of sexual assault
-rigging of public discourse and systematic social media censorship
-authoritarian and homophobic education reforms, and targeting of lgbtq+ activists on social media by a ND MP
– the serial rape and paedophilic scandal involving the PM’s close friend Dimitris Lignadis
– the negligence of Dimitris Koufontinas‘ hunger strike and prisoner rights by the gov
– attacks against students of the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki
– severe regulations against refugees, reports of illegal pushbacks, and failure of emergency services to respond to deadly fire outbreaks in the camps
Repression and abuse of power are omnipresent, Fortress Europe is morally bankrupt and we refuse to stand by and watch while people are continually stripped of their rights.
Join us this Sunday and raise your voice against state repression – there will be speeches and performances. Solidarity is our weapon!
